San Felasco Hammock is named for an old Spanish
Mission, San Francisco de Potano which ministered
to the Indians living here centuries ago. Over
time the early settlers continually mispronounced
San Francisco until the area became known as San
Felasco. "Hammock" is an Indian word
that means "shady." The lower two thirds
of San Felasco has been set aside for hiking only.
The northern most 2,000 acres have been designated
for multi-use purposes including horseback riding,
off-road bicycling and hiking. Trails in this
section were built by The Friends of San Felasco,
Inc. and other interested volunteers.
Park Activities

Bicycling
The Equestrian and Mountain Bike Trailhead located
off of US 441 south of Alachua offers a 1.0 mile,
a 4.2 mile, and a 8.0 mile mountain bike trail system
of interconnected loops. The equestrian trails offer
a 3.6 mile and a 4.4 mile interconnected loop system
except at intersections, the equestrian and mountain
bike trails are separate trails. Although hikers
are welcome to use both trails, pets (except horses)
are not allowed on the trails. Sorry, no rental
horses or bicycles are available. Horse riders should
have proof of negative coggins on their person or
in their saddlebags.
San Felasco Hammock offers a 0.9 mile nature trail, a 5.6 mile hiking trail, and a 4.8 mile hiking trail at the Hiking Trailhead located on CR 232 (Millhopper Road) No bicycles or horses are allowed on these trails, however pets on a hand-held 6 foot leash are welcome.
