Alafia River Canoe TrailPaddlers share the peace and quiet with wading birds and turtles. The Alafia is a fairly swift river, especially for central Florida, and some small shoals are exposed in low water.
Cape Haze Pioneer TrailThis trail, opened in 1999, is built along a segment of the former Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railroad. One of the primary uses of this former rail line was transport of phosphate from Florida’s inland mining district to deep-water ships at Boca Grande.
Estero River Canoe TrailThe trail makes an interesting and easy one-day trip exploring mangrove coves and islands. Wildlife is abundant, including yellow-crowned night heron, anhinga and cormorant.
Gasparilla Island-Boca Grande TrailThis is the first rail trail built in Florida. It runs the length of Gasparilla Island on Florida’s southwest coast through the town of Boca Grande.
General James A Van Fleet Trail State ParkThis rail-trail is one of Florida’s most rural. It runs through the Green Swamp, the headwaters for some of Florida’s most canoed rivers, the Withlacoochee (South), Hillsborough, and Peace.
Hickey Creek Canoe TrailThis trail, with its placid, tannin-stained water, makes a good half-day trip. The subtropical vegetation along the banks is home for wildlife including osprey and heron.
Hillsborough River Canoe TrailThe river begins in southwest Pasco County in the Green Swamp. From the Green Swamp, the River begins as an overflow from the Withlacoochee River, north of US Highway 98.
Little Manatee River Canoe TrailAlong the beautiful Little Manatee River, you will paddle through a variety of habitats including sand pine scrub, willow swampy, and hardwood forest. Look for otter, alligator, and turtles along the trail.
Oscar Scherer State Park Trails
The park is particularly noted for its population of Florida Scrub-Jays, which are a threatened species. Opportunities to camp and canoe also await at Oscar Scherer to complement your trail adventure.

Pinellas TrailThe Pinellas Trail is truly one of Florida’s premier urban trails. Stretching from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg, the trail links some of Pinellas County’s most picturesque parks, scenic coastal areas and residential neighborhoods.
Pithlachoscotee River Canoe TrailThis short trail is recommended for paddlers with some experience. The tight curves in the narrow upper section require some technical paddling skill.
Suncoast TrailOpened in 2001, this non-motorized paved trail was developed as part of the Suncoast Parkway. Paralleling the parkway, the trail begins in northern Hillsborough County and proceeds north through Pasco and Hernando counties, traversing suburban, agricultural and natural areas.
Upper Manatee River Canoe TrailThis trail makes an ideal half-day trip. Only a few miles from Bradenton, the Upper Manatee River is easily accessible and you can paddle both ways so you don’t have to arrange for pick-up.
Upper Tampa Bay TrailThe Upper Tampa Bay Trail is envisioned as a major north-south paved multi-use, non-motorized trail in northwest Hillsborough County. Four miles of trail are completed between Linebaugh Avenue and Peterson Road Park.
